If you are flying into Salt Lake City to visit a Bonneville Racing event, the information and resources below, will make your visit smooth and your Bonneville experience one you will remember fondly for years to come.
The beautiful Burkdoll Family Streamliner was destroyed in a 300 MPH crash
(no injuries) in 2004.
The Bonneville Salt Flats are located approximately 120 miles west of Salt Lake City. The drive to Bonneville is on an excellent 4 lane divided highway I-80. The scenery along the way takes you along the Great Salt lake, thru Utah's High Desert and across Bonnevilles famous Flats. The drive from Salt Lake City to Bonneville takes approximately 2 hours. Rental car information.
Most of the major national brand rental car companies do not approve of
their cars being used on the salt flats. If a car is returned to them showing
obvious signs of salt, be prepared to pay stiff surcharges.
One local auto rental company, Salt
Lake City Rent-A-Wreck, has a strong connection to Bonneville racing
and allows its rentals to be used at Bonneville (the USFRA prohibits the
racing of rental cars). By prearranging for your auto rental (you must be
21 and use a Valid Credit Card) from Rent-A-Wreck in Salt lake City, you
can pickup your rental car or have it delivered to you (during business
hours) on arrival at Salt Lake City International Airport or delivered to
your Salt Lake City Hotel room. Try Salt
Lake City Rent-A-Wreck. they have reasonable rates for excellent vehicles,
and permit visiting the Salt Flats Races in their rental cars.
I should warn that while driving on the salt is fine,
be careful to stick to areas where you see other vehicles. Near the perimiter
of the saltflats, the salt in very thin and underneath is MUD. It is VERY
expensive to have a tow truck come from Wendover to pull a stuck vehicle
from the nasty gumbo underneath the salt. It can be a VERY long walk
(10-20 miles, in the desert, people have died out there) from where you
get stuck to the nearest phone, so don't get too adventurous exploring.
